UK Battery Materials Circularity

Circular Battery

The Mission

Zero Mining.
Full Circularity.

The UK has classified cobalt and lithium as high-criticality minerals. Yet today, they are imported from across the world while end-of-life batteries sit unrecycled at home and in scrapyards.

Phoenix Labs is building the domestic refining capacity the UK needs: adaptive, intelligent, and designed for the mixed-chemistry reality of the EV transition.

Phoenix Labs equipment and operational environment
~50,000 miles
Each kilogram of battery metal can travel before reaching a factory — roughly circling the Earth twice.
60% of cobalt
Comes from the Congo, where absent safety equipment and child labour remain material industry concerns.
400× overburden
Traditional mining shifts 200,000 kg of earth to produce a single 400 kg EV battery pack.
Battery Supply Chain Gateway

The mandatory junction
between battery return
and final outcome.

A public-facing pathway for battery owners, recyclers and manufacturers to move returned batteries toward the right next use.

01
Returned Batteries
End-of-life packs enter a structured review pathway.
02
Initial Review
Each return is assessed before a downstream route is chosen.
03
Route Selection
The next step is selected based on reuse, recycling or refining potential.
04
Reuse Pathway
Suitable packs can be directed toward further useful life.
05
Recycling Pathway
Materials that cannot be reused are prepared for material return.
06
Refining Pathway
Viable material streams move toward domestic circular supply.

Key Insight

The battery return chain has no clear decision layer between first-life exit and final outcome.

Packs should not default straight to recycling. They first need triage across repair, second-life and recycling, and Phoenix Labs is designed to make that review practical.

Fragmented after return
Once a battery leaves first life, the chain often breaks into separate actors with no single layer deciding what should happen next.
Not one default route
Repair, second-life and recycling are different pathways. They need triage first, rather than being treated as one generic end state.
Operational triage layer
Phoenix Labs is built to make that review practical, and to connect viable material streams with domestic refining pathways.

The Process

Integrated
Refining System

Four broad stages connect returned battery materials with responsible reuse and circular supply.

01

Material Preparation

Returned battery materials are prepared for downstream handling so each stream can move through the right pathway.

02

Separation

Different material groups are separated through a refining workflow designed for mixed battery inputs.

03

Refinement

Recovered streams are refined into useful material categories for circular battery supply chains.

04

Quality Review

Each stage is reviewed to support consistency, traceability and responsible downstream use.

Recovered Material Categories

How the software supports circular materials

01
Review
Material streams are reviewed before processing decisions are made.
02
Classify
The workflow helps group returns by likely downstream pathway.
03
Support
Software assists teams in keeping processing decisions consistent.
04
Report
Outcomes are recorded in a clear public-facing operational record.

Operating Principle

The software layer exists to support consistent decisions, clear records and responsible handling across mixed battery material streams.

Process Review

Every batch gets a
dedicated process review.

Each material stream is reviewed before and after processing so decisions stay consistent and traceable.

Mixed battery materials do not behave uniformly. The public-facing goal is clear review, responsible routing and useful circular outcomes.

Roadmap

Recycle. Refine.
Re-build.

Three phases to full circularity. We start in the middle of the value chain and expand outwards.

Phase 02
Recycle

Develop recycling pathways for end-of-life EV packs and battery materials.

Phase 01 · Now
Refine

Develop domestic refining capacity for useful battery material streams.

Phase 03
Re-build

Support future circular supply chains by connecting recovered materials with manufacturing partners.
